Make Free IPhone Ringtones using ITunes
By lyla
You have just bought your brand new shiny Apple iPhone! How cool is that? So, now surely you would love to have some amazing various ring tones for your iPhone! Well, there’s a huge collection of ring tones available in iTunes stores. But then, do you feel that you would rather not spend 99cents for each ring tone from iTunes stores? Do you feel that it is a waste of money to buy ring tones? No worries! You can make your own ring tones using iTunes ,from the huge collection of songs in your iTunes library. However, the songs you use to make iPhone ring tones should be DRM free. Thus, you may use iTunes to convert any MP3 song into an iPhone ringtone and you can create ringtones from the songs that you purchased from Amazon store or ripped from a CD or maybe even downloaded from the internet. It is a real snap making your own ringtones using iTunes!
To make your free ringtones in iTunes:
Download iTunes 8.
- Open iTunes
- Select a song in your itunes library and right click on it .
- Select ‘Get Info’.
- Now, click on the Options tab
- Check the boxes ‘Start Time’ and ‘Stop Time’ (make sure to keep it under 30 seconds.)
- Click on ‘OK’
So far, so good!
- Return to your Itunes library
- Right click on the song again and choose create AAC version
Done!
The song has been clipped and saved as ACC version.
- Now,drag and drop the AAC version of the song onto your desktop.
- Delete the AAC version from your iTunes library. You have no need to keep that file.
- The file extension on your desktop will read like this: songname.m4a. Rename the file to : songname.m4r
(Right click the file on your desktop and click on properties and you will see the file name as .m4a)
- Drag the file on your desktop back to your iTunes or double click on the file and the song will be saved under ring tones in your itunes library.
- Remember to uncheck the start and stop in the Option tab so that your original song will be played to the full.
The next time you sync your iPhone ,the ringtone will appear under the ringtone options in your iPhone. Now, you can transfer your new free ringtone!
Note: iPhone ringtones should not be longer than 30 seconds. If the tune is longer than that, you will not be able to sync it to your iPhone and use it as ring tone!
That's it! Enjoy creating as many ringtones as you wish, all from your favourite songs and you can save them all your in the ringtone folder in your iTunes library.Flaunt your ringtones!

You ringtone tutorial is great. I can't believe how much companies are making off of ringtones. I have always just used music I already have to make ringtones. Obviously if I like the song enough to make it my ringtone I already paid for it once. I shouldn't need to buy the ringtone too. I have always used Quick Time Pro. But, I will have to try Itunes. I never realized I could make them there too.
I loaded my iPhone from a drive given to me by a DJ, so I didn't have to buy any of the songs. But then it wouldn't let me use any of them to make ringtones. I figured it was because I didn't purchase them from iTunes. I wasn't about to buy a song I already have and pay ANOTHER 99 cents to convert it to a ringtone. I'm not that big of a sucker.
So I'm glad to have your tutorial here to make it happen. The preloaded ringtones are cool, but the songs are better.
Thanks Brenda ..for appreciating!:)The pics are screen shots I took for this tutorial..thanks!:)
@ jim10..I have never tried Quickpro for ringtones..maybe I will now!:)Gladou like this!Thanks.
@Laughing mom..Glad that you found this tutorial useful!:)Thanks a ton.:)
It didn't work for me because I couldn't get the file to rename on my desktop. Never would save to my ringtones. I ended up having to pay the 99 cents to do it. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
I could not change the m4a to m4r
